Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 3-4 tbsp ice water

For the Filling:

  • 6 cups peeled, sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust:
In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water, 1 tbsp at a time, until the dough comes together. Roll out the dough and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Chill in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour until well coated. Set aside.
  3. Make the Crumble Topping:
Combine flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble the Pie:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Place the apple filling into the chilled pie crust. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake the Pie:
Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. If the crust edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil.
  6. Cool and Serve:
Let the pie cool for at least 1 hour before serving. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for balanced flavor.
  • The pie is best served warm but can be enjoyed at room temperature.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
