This classic patty melt recipe features juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese, and crispy rye bread. Perfect for a hearty and flavorful meal, it's a satisfying sandwich that combines the best of a burger and a grilled cheese.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet. Add sliced onions, cook until caramelized (about 15 minutes).
  2. Shape ground beef into patties, season with salt and pepper. Cook in a separate skillet until done (about 4 minutes per side).
  3. Butter one side of each rye bread slice.
  4. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on the unbuttered side of 2 bread slices, top with a patty, caramelized onions, and another cheese slice.
  5. Top with remaining bread, butter side out.
  6. Grill sandwiches in a skillet until bread is golden and cheese is melted.

Notes

  • Swap Swiss cheese for cheddar or American if preferred.
  • Add pickles or mustard for extra flavor.
